 I found the culprit.  I had this :_
 setenv QTDIR=/usr/pkgsrc/x11/qt-public-cvs
in root's .profile. I think I put it there when
was I trying to get KOFFICE working on my machine.
That's probably the reason I never go KOFFICE working.
