question first: what's the proper way to add packages? 
just tar --unlink -xvpzf pkg.tgz? or pkg_add pkg.tgz? or some combination
of both?

and 'top' has problems on my machine:
kvm_open: proc size mismatch (7414 total, 666 chunks)
top: Out of memory.

I've got a Centris 650 w/ 48 megs of ram, and 51 megs of swap GENERIC 6
MGR kernel

(that 666 chunks leaves me to believe my machine is possessed, tho I may
be wrong :D )
