Hey,

The PB540c _will_ do 16 bit color.  The catch is you have to switch to
640 x 320? resolution first then you have thousands of colors avalible
to you in the bit depth portion of the monitors control panel. It's very
letter box and may be less screne real estate than you'd like. I don't
know if X handles that screen resolution tho.  Worth a try.
