Sorry I didn't read Sean's post carefully enough.  I responded to the
"if I try to pull up a web site" part solely.  Oops.

Like others replied, you cannot do colors in 8-bit mode.  The best you 
can do is fixed grayscale mode.  But even so, I've been told that
mozilla has a bug which causes everything in its window to appear in
reversed shades.  The bug is noticeable only when you are running it
in gray scale mode, apparently.
