If I do this, the prompt line jumps up a half screen of output.  This 
isn't too nice, though, having to clear out the startup messages so I 
don't have to overwrite a half screenful of them.  Also, I get a 
blank line between every promptline.

On the other hand, my arrow keys work in vi (quite nice).
