Howdy,

There is an interesting thread on /. concerning backing up the win & mac
clients onto a un*x server. There are as many different ways to do this
as there are posts to this thread. Here is the pertinent link:

http://slashdot.org/askslashdot/99/07/15/2353253.shtml

The advise falls into a few basic catigories:

*(insert cron jobs, applescripts were needed)

1. have un*x mount client win & mac machines through samba / NetaTalk
and tar up a picture of the whole drive. (restoring seems like it would
be a BIG headache)

2. Buy a commercial product

3. Have your win / mac clients keep all important docs/data in a dir on
the un*x box and then tar up that directory to tape.

4. Have you win/mac make a disc image on the un*x server. Tar up disk
image.

5. There was a metion of free AppleShareIP on un*x, Is this in
NetaTalk? I know it can share files, share printers.

I assume the demographics on this port-mac68k list is homegenious in a
few respects e.g.: own more than one mac (more like 5 to 10 since
quadras are around $125 now and anything in the II series is $10-$25.).
Run NetBSD on most macs and have a couple running MacOS mainly for
quicken. Wife/Girlfriend bitching about all the _junk_ in the office.
(thats not junk that was a $10,000 machine when it was new!)...I
digress..:) The point is what better place to ask this question than
this list.

I'd like your opinions on above as well as on some secure, safe, sane,
easily restorable ways that you are succesfully using to do this mixed
network automated backup scheme. You all do have backups...right????
:)
