Sendmail is for sending mail hence the name, sendmail :)

Yes, you'll need an imap or pop daemon.  University of Washington (the
people who make pine) put out a decent imap and pop package (probably
available in the ports collection).

Other alternatives for pop daemons are cucipop and qpopper (the latter is
put out by the makers of Eudora).

Yes, this is correct, sendmail is an smtp daemon.
