for cd's, get a copy of xcmd (i think that's what it's called) from the
package collection.  i believe it will allow you to play cd's in playthru
mode.

we don't currently support the audio hardware on '040 macs at all, and we
only have enough support to beep on the '030's, so there is no way to play
an mp3.  with any luck, this will change in the next month or so as there
are a couple of people working on this (including myself).
