broad question...

the plug you are talking about is a rj45, meaning the network speed
could be 10 or 100mbs. if i remember correctly, your quadra has a plug
for this kind of cable in the back. connect a cable to that and one of
the hubs (a box that all computers are connected to). after that you're
connected, which doesn't mean you can do anything yet.

once that works, you have to find out what kind of network protocol the
pc's are using. if they're using TCP/IP, you should have no problems
connecting. ask whoever's in charge of the network if he can spare an
address and set up your ethernet interface (the network hardware) as
described in the faq.

once that works and you can ping other machines (as in typing "ping
123.456.789.10" where the number is that of another machine on the lan)
you can go about setting up samba to be able to share files and printers
with everyone else. if you're using netbsd-1.3, there's a precompiled
samba package at
ftp://ftp.NetBSD.ORG/pub/NetBSD/packages/1.3/mac68k/net/.

probably the best thing to do though would be to get in touch with
whoever's in charge of the network and work it out with him/her.

b.t.w: there are no precompiled packages for 1.4... i have a iicx lying
around - admitedly not a powerhorse, but it's about 90% idle - and can
compile packages for anybody who needs them. i'm just kind of new to
netbsd, so a few short instructions might not be a bad idea...

cheers
