does it at least beep?  has it in the past?  if not, then the sound
hardware on that machine must be a little strange.  i'll have to see if i
can fix that...

can anyone who has an LCII and compiles their own 1.4_ALPHA kernels test a
patch for me?  let me know if you can, and i'll send you the patch.
