do you have an 'LC040 or a full '040 processor?  if it's the former, that
me be what's causing the problem.  there is a known bug in the
floating-point emulation for that processor which causes somewhat frequent
(and somewhat random) segfaults.  unfortunately, i don't think anyone
really knows what's going on well enough to fix it at the moment :-(

however, if you have a full '040, then i'm not too sure what's going on
unless you've got some corrupted binaries.  were there any errors on the
install?
