I haven't looked at this in a long time, but I think it should be
possible to shut the card down as soon as we identify what it is,
then fully initialize the card, then enable it.  If this is done in the
right sequence, I don't think this should happen.  I seem to recall that
it looked OK when I looked at it a long time ago, though.  It probably
wouldn't hurt for another pair of eyes to look at it.
