A little more to add for info, sorry I didn't add it earlier

by using 'top' I can see this

22 processes: 1 running, 21 sleeping
CPU States 0.8% user, 0.0% nice, 1.7% system, 0.0% interrupt, 98.4% idle
Memory: 1012K Act 6060K Inact 3444K Wired 24M Free 6420K Swap 95M Swap 
free

the only non-standard (if you want to call it that) that is runnig right 
now is httpd, and as I am currently the only one that even knows the site 
exists, hence the only one that might be  using it, so I killed it and 
tried again, even though I don't believe I should have needed to, same 
problem with virtual memory being exhausted....<sigh>
