Is virtual memory *not* the same as swap space? I am trying to compile
octave, and get getting "virtual memory exhausted" error messages. When I
use "vmstat" during the compile, I can see the virtual memory getting used
up. However if I use "pstat -s" the swap partition doesn't appear to get
touched.

Vital stats: Mac IIci, 20 meg RAM, 40 meg swap partition.
