Paul's original linuxppc driver is pretty much all I need for now. The grf
interface has no notion of resolution setting. I'd like to change this
at some point. In fact, I would like to see if I can persuade tech-kern
to go with the XF68k fb interface considering we already use XFree for
our X server.

It might be. Give it a try :) Like I said, if you look at the technotes
for most of the low-end early PowerPC's they are basically 68k machines
with PPC accelerators. Most of the technotes even talk about a bridge chip
which converts PPC bus signals into 040 bus signals.
