Two things come to me.

1. Was your CD-ROM recognized in boot-up time, Guy?
"dmesg|grep ^cd" shows the result like below if it's okey.

cd0 at scsibus0 targ 6 lun 0: <SONY, CD-ROM CDU-561, 1.7X> SCSI2 5/cdrom removable

2. Try 'cd0a' not 'cd0c'.  I'm not sure if it works, though.
