This is what I have in /etc/ntp.conf

server	ntp.enteract.com
server	ntp-1.cso.uiuc.edu
server	ntp-2.cso.uiuc.edu
driftfile	/etc/ntp.drift

I set it up just to play, as my only connection to the net is through
a dial-in account. After a many hours, the error just got worse and
worse. I've settled on putting "ntpdate ntp" in my ip-up script. I
also made ntpdate suid root, and call it frequently while I'm online.

There's a kernel option "NTP" that might help, if only we could build
kernels.

Of course you won't be able to use "ntp.enteract.com". The other two
are public, and fairly close to me, netwise. If your internet provider
doesn't provide an ntp server, you'll need to find some public ones
that are more suitable than nist's. First check out
