I'm trying to find out the "proper" or "correct" way to install packages.
Specifically, I'd like to install perl. Actually, I think I've got it
installed ... I just want to make sure I did it correctly.
What I did was:
su
cd /usr/local
tar -xvf perl-5.00404.tgz
It seems to have put all the files in the correct place. The puzzling thing
was that it also added the following files to the /usr/local directory:
+CONTENTS
+COMMENT
+DESC
+MTREE_DIRS
So, maybe there's a more appropriate way to install packages. Comments?
Thanks
