About booting on a Classic II, Colin Wood (and others) suggested:

Tried the GENERIC-81 kernal and it stopped after the screen cleared with
the message:

System RAM: 10452992 bytes in 2552 pages.
     Low = 0x0, high = 0x9f8000
  no internal video at address 0 -- videoaddr is 0xfee09a80

But then nothing and I have to hit the bong button.

[I assume the memory information is correct - 10Mb of memory with the
512x342 display at the top ending at the highest byte. Why is high less
than start of video? - I knew this once but have forgotten. Is something
mapping here?]

I also used the new GENERIC-82 kernel with the same results.

This is the same behaviour as the original 1.3.2 kernel.

Should I be using the other current kernels rather than straight GENERIC?
 I couldn't find an explanation for what the others were, but I thought
that the HWDIRECT option was now turned on in GENERIC, so I shouldn't
need any other options, should I?

Andrew Foakes
