Depends :) You can configure it either way... What I did was enable getty
on the port and created a user that would start pppd upon login. That way,
I could either connect with a terminal program, login with my usual login
and get a shell, or I could connect with PPP, login with the special PPP
login and get a PPP connection.

If you don't have getty running, you'll need to have pppd running on the
port directly.

That should work, but an ImageWriter II printer cable will work too.
