Something I forgot to mention in my original message -- when I
ran fsck on the partitions, it got the block counts right on all
of them.  The Installer's "disklabel" also gets it right.

I'm resigned to the idea of wipe & reload, especially since many
executables on /usr are no longer executable, but I'd be interested
in knowing what made this happen in the first place -- to avoid
future occurrences if nothing else.
