A couple of things:

1.  The SLOTMAN kernel is a NetBSD/mac68k version 1.3_BETA kernel;  it
    may be incompatible with your 1.2.1 userland binaries.

2.  What kind of video card is it?  What did NetBSD say about it during
    system startup?  (Send the output from dmesg.)

3.  The error message you get about the video mode indicates that X
    couldn't tell yourmonitor to go into 8-bit mode and it couldn't tell
    it to enter 1-bit mode.  In other words, the attempts to set the
    video bit-depth failed.  Unfortunately, the old X server didn't 
    provide any further information than that.

    I'm working on integrating Ken Nakata's Xserver changes into the
    new, XFree86 based, code, and I'll be displaying a (slightly) more
    detailed error message under these conditions.  Unfortunately, it
    will be a while until I get the new color-X server ready.
