Hi,
Just to clarify things a bit for those people who have come to NetBSD on
the Mac recently. Currently, you can run X in one of two modes: monochrome
or 256 color. You do not really need to do anything that special to get
monochrome X to work. IMHO, while color X is better than monochrome X,
monochrome X is better than no X at all. I used to run it with fvwm and it
didn't look that bad at all.
To get color running, you need to do several things. 1) Color X only runs on
certain Nubus video cards. See the MacBSD FAQ for a hopefully up to date
list of supported cards. 2) You need a kernel that will deal with your
Nubus card. I believe the SLOTMAN kernel is the kernel of choice in this
area. 3) You need to get the video LKM with Colin's patches. 4) You need to
get the X distribution from the !! NetBSD 1.2 distribution !! The color X
server will not work with the 1.3 X distribution. 5) You need to get the color
X server. Again, this server only supports 256 colors. A link to it can be
found in the MacBSD FAQ.
Note that you can run the 1.2 X distribution with 1.3. I am living proof as my
IIcx is running 1.3-ALPHA, 1.2 X distribution, and Ken's colorkit X server.
I hope this clears things up.
