my guess would be that you're missing something from a 7.0.1 install and
not in the 7.6 install.  did you do a "custom install" or a normal install
of 7.0.1?  netbsd appears to need something that is not included in a
minimal install, so that might be it.  you might also try system 7.1 if
you can find a copy.  i find that it has a very small memory footprint but
works better than 7.0.1 (and it boots netbsd on my machines just fine ;-)

the LCII _is_ 32-bit clean (only the older Mac II-series machines were

Maybe so.  I'd recommend redoing the 7.0.1 install as a full install, then
you can toss any extensions you don't want.  There is actually something
put into the system file itself by a full install of the system that's not
there in a minimal install (and maybe even a custom install in this case).

are you sure about this?  your machine should be in 32-bit mode before you
even try to boot (check in the memory control panel to be sure).  i'm
pretty sure that the current booter will warn you about this and stop
before booting if this is the case....
