I usually boot in 1-bit (I have the booter make the switch) so that I can
use dt without having started X first (dt doesn't like 8-bit all that much
:-)
It's also possible that you don't have one of the video cards that the LKM
supports, perhaps you'd have better luck with the SLOTMAN patches?
