How do they fail to work?  Does the error message above mean you found
a bug _in_ _ctwm_, or one _in_ _the_ _server_?

I haven't used anything but twm on my Mac, but I thought there were
other people running fvwm.  Perhaps some of them could comment on how
to do that.  Or, you might find something useful by searching the
mailing list archives.

Well, the 'old' distribution and the color server are old, but not
that old.  AFAIK, there has been no major X protocol change (one major
enough to break things for WMs) introduced between R6 (the old) and
R6.3 (the current).
