Ken,

What's so hard to understand? I have an ethernet here, and all my
machines attach to it, either on thinwire, or via UTP and a hub.
Real tough to understand. Everything else works UNTIL I try to connect
from the Mac running NetBSD. That kills the link completely. Whats so
hard to understand about that? It isn't real complicated.

Certainly, how else would it get to the router ? It wouldn't do much
good to try to connect from a machine that wasn't on the network!

The modem hangs up the line, and the pppd is no longer running.

Nonsense! The link works for hours on end UNTIL I try to telnet from
the Mac running NetBSD. I can ftp, lynx, or Mosaic thru this link
when running ANYTHING except NetBSD! The Linux box is running as a
maquerading router (NAT), which hides my home ethernet behind a single
IP address. Everything else works fine; other Mac's running 7.6, other
Mac's running 8.0, a laptop running either WFW or Linux, all connect
fine thru the router (Linux box) to anything.

ONLY NETBSD KILLS the link! You're making it more complicated than
it is. It really is as simple as that. Everything else works. NetBSD
doesn't, and it kills the link. Simple as that.
