Well, the shell builds a hash table of where to find executables.  It does
this when you change directories.  But, you created a link _after_ the
hash table was built, so the entry for that executable wasn;t in the 
table.

You could have just changed directories then changed back, or you could
always force the shell to rebuld the hash table with the `rehash' command.
