Just a minute ago I was typing in the command to cd to a directory, and
before I could complete the command my hard drive made a noise like it
was doing a seek. Then the computer froze. Nothing I type is shown on
the monitor. C-c does not exit anything. Several returns and then
'shutdown -r now' typed in the blind doesn't work either.

I am running 1.3_alpha on a IIci with 24M RAM and a 540M Quantum Maverick
hard drive using the GENERICSBC#48 kernel. A little while ago I was
running screen, but killed it using ps.

Any suggestions on how to get running again? Will I have to do a hard
shutdown?

TIA,

Sean.
