Thanks for the info.  I've zapped the PRAM a number of times.  I even 
have some utility (name escapes me) that claims to do a better job of 
zapping it than the command-option-P-R.  I've never repeatedly zapped it, 
though....  I'll try it.  

I'll also follow through on your advice to update my HD drivers and HDSC 
setup and Disk First Aid.  But I've already gone through a couple of 
generations of those with no positive effect on the problem.
