I had the same experience on an SE/30 (Quantum Lightning 730, 32 MB)
upgrading this way. The only thing I remember to work without dumping a
core was 'sync'.
I rebooted and installed the packages from the MacOS side.

BTW: Why is the installer so much slower than tar -xzvf? For example,
installing the /usr/share/zoneinfo files takes a *lot* more time.
