According to http://www.netbsd.org/Releases/current.html:

NetBSD-current is a daily snapshot of the NetBSD development source
tree. Because it is ``work in progress,'' it may not be particularly
well tested, and it may not even compile. People developing drivers
and other system-level software for NetBSD are encouraged to run
NetBSD-current, as are people who want to be on the bleeding edge of
NetBSD development. If you're just using NetBSD for day-to-day work,
you should probably be running a formal release of NetBSD instead.

1.3_alpha is NetBSD-current, but the features have been frozen in
preparation for the 1.3 release. In general, only bugfixes will be made to
it.

1.3_alpha is the most recent stuff us normal folks have access to
right now...

As for getting your machines to work, you can try different kernels,
although I don't know if you'll have any more luck with them. If
you're able to compile kernels, you can get the source and try to get
it to work that way. The 1.3_alpha source is at
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/tar_files/src/sys.tar.gz
(and is really huge, since it includes the source for all the other
machines NetBSD supports too).
