Actually, there are three ranges.  They might be 08:00, 00:05, and
00:A0.  The reason for the extra one was that they stored the ID in
the PROM in bit-byte-reversed format for some reason, and at least
one version of the system software used the ID unreversed.  That put
Apple in the awkward position of using MAC addresses that were not
assigned to them...  The best resolution was to acquire the addresses...

At least, that's how I understand it.
