OK, you were all right. Used the installer instead of uncompressing it
with Stuffit expander and it worked just fine. Thanks!

I'd suggest trying to install the kernel using the installer. The MacOS
gunzip tools seem to take it apon themselves to do ASCII translation,
which will ruin the kernel. You should be able to install the kernel
just like you installed base, etc, and the others.
