man adduser tells about the procedure of adding users, not about an
adduser command -- there is no such command.

don't edit /etc/passwd and /etc/master.passwd directly, use the
vipw command.

about invalid user names: which name(s) are you using ? if you
don't solve the problem by yourself, you might forward a copy
of your passwd file to the list for further questioning.

.. 2) how does one get ethernet up & running? Is there a FAQ or a how-to or
.. something on this? I've set up Linux systems w/ ethernet before, but
.. NetBSD seems to be layed out quite differently and all my attempts so
.. far to get the LCII on the LAN under NetBSD have been unsuccessful (no
.. probs in MacOS though, so I know the card is OK)

does the ethernet show up in the boot messages? (you can review
the boot messages with the dmesg command or by looking in
/var/log/messages).

.. 4) The latest NetBSD/mac68k Booter does not seem to be able to save the
.. booting preferences - is this a known bug?

sometimes the solution has been to update and save the booter's
preferences. then quit the booter and start it again before trying
to boot.
