Everything below seems fine. Your setup is like the one I have at
home, except I used 10.0.0.X/255.255.255.0 for my net.

The last sentance above explains why you don't need a gateway. There's
no where to gate to! You'll just have a setup w/o a default IP
route. Or, if you fire up ppp/slip w/ ipnat on one machine, make
it the gateway for the other machine. :-)
