Hm... It's helpful that the problem (assuming a single cause) shows up
under NetBSD *and* MacOS. That shinks the range of possibilities. The only
OS-independent things I can think of that might be affecting you are:

1) Maybe something is messed up in your PRAM. Zapping it might help.
Zapping your PRAM is often a black-magic cure-all for obscure problems. If
you have another battery that'll fit your Mac, trying that might be useful,
if zapping the PRAM alone doesn't help.

2) It's possible your disk is slowly going belly-up... Does it make any odd
noises that you haven't noticed in the past? I'd be more inclined to try
the PRAM first, though.

3) It's possible that your machine runs too hot. This *wouldn't* likely be
something that would manifest itself when booting, though, if your machine
has been off, and hence cold.
