It would also mean understanding the memory models for the different
systems.  (Possibly not a major chore--it might actually be more std.
than the MacOS.  I dunno.)

Well, I thought about this, but if you set the booter up to auto-boot
n a startup folder on a minimum MacOS partition, it's pretty close...
If I boot my Q700 w/ no extensions (System 7.1), I can turn on my 8500/120,
turn on my Q700, let them both boot, and NetBSD is up multi-user before
my 8500 (MacOS 8, base + a couple of small extensions) is.  It doesn't
beat the 8500 by too much, but...

Just about everything, actually.  Apple finally defined a strict subset
available to driver writers with the advent of the PCI cards & drivers.

It could be written mostly in C, I expect.  I don't think the system is
terribly different from a "normal" application in most regards.
