Note:  as I'm not familiar with the esp driver or the controller, what I'm
about to say is somewhat conjectural.

I don't think that there's any low-level similarity to these problems.
The way the two drivers interact with the hardware isn't particularly
similar; the esp driver appears to be operating in a PIO-like manner, and
the sbc driver tries to do pseudo DMA transfers.

I'd rather not try to guess at how this is failing. :-/
