Thanks to Colin Wood's suggestions, I've narrowed the problem down to...
the bourne shell.

The good new is that I know what the problem is.  The bad news is I don't
know what to do about it other than to get old sources or wait for new ones.

Has something drastically change recently in the shell?  Any suggestions?
Will there ever be a 1.3 release?  Will Pinky and the Brain ever rule the
earth?  Will...
