It depends on how Mosaic was compiled.  If Mosaic was dynamically
compiled, then, yes, you need the Motif shared libs in order to run it.
If, however, Mosaic was compiled statically, then you don't need them
(there is, or was, a version of Mosaic 2.7b5 in the Amiga archives that
was statically linked and worked quite well on my Mac before disk
corruption ate it).

As for running in color or not, I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
I've run mosaic on b&w sun 3/50's before and there were no problems there.
