Ok I may be able to help here the problems you describe sound like the
same stuff I went thru with my Performa 460 (roughly equivelant to
LC550) and what some LCIII people have reported. I'll wager that you got
that options=1<PDMA> from GENERICSBC ## where ## is anything later than 26
(including 27) which was what I first tried.  I've been using
GENERICSBC-26 and I've had no problems* for a few months.

*One problem is that this is a 1.2C kernel and as such it's not going to
work with ps, w, and a few other things (I've noticed identd doesn't
work).

along with various other things I used my isp's T3 to download :)
