Or, it may have something to do with the other error.  If ncr driver
has trouble dealing with the drive, isn't it possible for it to have
trouble finding an executable file?

Andrew, I suggest that you use *SBC kernel (that is, if you are using
GENERIC-XX kernel, the corresponding *SBC kernel is GENERICSBC-XX).
You can do ln /bin/test /bin/[ later.
