Your advice is mostly correct. 1.2.1 did NOT support 1000's of colors.

-current's kernels do, though. They support anywhere from 1 to 16 bits
per pixel.

X and dt, the two programs I think most people actually use when sitting
at the computer, do NOT support anything other than 1-bit monochrome.

Just a nit. :-)

Oh, and 8-bit color is HIDEOUSLY slow on my IIsi. Another reason to
go for monochrome.
