I'm using the esp driver with an IBM DFHS (Ultrastar XP or something like
that) and haven't been seeing any problems. The target initiated sync
negotiation thing does make the esp driver print some warning message at
probe time (something like unexpected disconnect), but everything still
works fine.

The esp driver has worked great on all the devices I've tried it with
(pretty much all hard drives though... nothing exotic like MOs or Zips). 
Quantum Fireball, Quantum Trailblazer, IBM DFHS, and some Sony CDROM
(Apple 300i, I think).
