Just tried it, same proble with another cable.  Both work fine for other
things, but anything between my MkLinux box and my NetBSD box results in
choking.  I guess I could try a third cable, but... that seems pretty
unlikely at two....  Nope.  Third one does, too.  Even tried switching
ports on the PB (was using printer <- -> printer), in case I had another
funny problem like I did between it and that Classic II under serial
console....

Which shouldn't matter at 1200 baud, should it?  Is there any way the
linux box could possibly send enough data at 1200 baud to make the NetBSD
kernel choke?  :-)  Maybe if I try 300 baud (or 120 or... :)

Here's another (probably crazy) question: is there any way this is caused
by the fact that the PB145 has no FPU?  I know that's kind of grasping for
(at?) straws....
