This happens to me even when I boot with NO extensions.  I am not able to 
send traffic if I let the error go unchecked.  The ONLY way I was able to 
get my ethernet working is by disconnecting it when it first boots.  
Since I run a commercial web site off this machine, reboots are minimal 
(months and months apart) so I don't see this very often.
