Try again.  Puma was in a state of "eternal shutdown" (i.e. with a
nologins file, but still running).  I tried to log in there briefly
yesterday, I think..., and it said shutting down at 1700 or something,
but... it was like 1 in the morning on the east coast (midnight here). 
Probably just a stale nologins file or something.  It'd affect ftp, too. 
That was also probably why the puma mirror (mirrored daily using SUP) at
macbsd-iici.jpl.nasa.gov was sending me long cron outputs of failures over
and over and....  :-)
