To add to Jason's remarks: The pmax port (what about powerpc and alpha?) 
use Elf instead of aout, and works with current gcc & binutils. On one
hand this is good, but on the other side it has the disadvantage of making
this (these?)  ports different than the "normal" NetBSD ports. 

A total conversion to elf has been discussed before and it seems to be
a non-trivial task -- and not all people seem to agree that this is the
long-term goal.
