When I try to telnet into my 1.2.1 machine I get the following:

/netbsd: arplookup: unable to enter address for ccb503bf

I also cant get elm to read the mail because (I think) it can't
lock the mailbox for reading. 

I suspect that I have somehow messed up the permissions on 

/var or /tmp  or something.

Does anyone have a suggestion?
